Frequently Asked Questions

Fiber

Q: How are the animals treated?

A: We source our fiber from a number of small farms and

Q: Where do the sheep live?

A: Much of the merino wool, superfine wool, and the coarse wool that we source comes from the midwestern united states where the climate favors these large breeds of fine fiber sheep. The rest of the wool, all of the alpaca, the mohair, and angora rabbit fur we use in our knitting yarns comes from the South Eastern United States - usually within two to three hours of Echoview.

Q: What percentage of your fibers are local? How many farms do you work with?

Q: Can we process small lots with you?

A: At this time, we can only take processing small and large lots through the washing and carding stage of processing. Our pin-drafting and spinning frames are currently fully occupied. The washing and carding stages will clean your fiber, pick, and card the fiber into roving or batts.

Q: Is your wool superwashed?

A: No. We do not use superwashed wool for spinning yarn because we feel that it is an unnecessary step of chemical processing that is not necessary for knitting yarn - even for sock knitting yarn. We do use superwashed wool in our t-shirt fabric as it is hard for many people to remember to wash a shirt separately, however most people know that a hand knit, crocheted, or woven garment or home good should be washed with care.

Q: Are all your colors from natural dyes?

A: Only the yarns specified as botanically dyed come from natural dyes. The rest of our wool is dyed in top form with commercial dyes at a factory about 2 hours down the road here in North Carolina. The same factory also yarn dyes our wool yarn used on the knitting machine. We try to never dye alpaca fiber as alpacas have been carefully bred by the farmers in Peru to naturally produce up to 22 colors ranging from pure white, to solid black. We love to try to highlight the natural neutrals grown by the alpaca.

Sustainability

Q: Do we use plastics in our products?

A: We do not spin any plastics or synthetic fiber, such as polyester, nylon, or acrylic, into our yarns. We Do not add those fibers into anything on the knitting machine either, though we do use a polly/cotton blend sewing thread for products that we cut and sew. When we need to add a strengthening agent to our yarns, we use tencel - a manmade fiber that is derived from eucalyptus wool pulp. Our socks do have some elastic added for stretch and durability. We are in the process of eliminating all plastics from our packaging and shipping process.

Q: How are our natural dyes eco friendly?

A: There will always be folks on both sides of the natural vs.synthetic dye camp in regards to what is the most sustainable choice. While natural dyes are typically created from a plant, there are often metals used in the process of mordanting the fiber that can be
